THE BAND - WHAT WE DO

What We Play

The New Black Eagle Jazz Band , now in it's 36th year, plays traditional jazz. This style, as performed by the Black Eagles, covers a wide range from the early New Orleans style; Chicago of the 1920's; 1930's small band jazz; the revival of the 1940's and 1950's; and original pieces written by a number of band members.

Our repertoire of over 600 numbers includes Rags by such as Scott Joplin, arranged for the band; spirituals and gospel music; old pop tunes from the start of the 20th century to the 1960's; and blues.

While the band doesn't usually make big features of vocal numbers we do have three good vocalists with a broad repertoire whose vocals are always well received by audiences.

Where We Play

The New Black Eagle Jazz Band make a series of regular monthly appearances and can also be hired to play special events such as concerts, private parties and jazz festivals. We have toured in Europe many times, most recently in Holland, Belgium, and the UK.

Our regular appearances include J.P. O'Hanlon's Pub in Ayer MA on the second Thursday of every month, and three or four gigs every year at the Sherborn Inn in Sherborn MA.

We play many concert series throughout New England and are known for presenting a program which will appeal to all ages and tastes. Typical of such concert series is that at Mount Gretna, PA. We have been playing at Mount Gretna for 25 or more years and for many of those years were the only jazz act in an otherwise purely classical music series.

If you go to our "Past Performances" page you will see the broad range of venues at which we have played.

Symphony Arrangements

We take special pride in having professionally written arrangements for jazz band and symphony orchestra. We have performed with, among others, The Boston Symphony; The Scottish National Orchestra; and The Baltimore Symphony.

We have enough material for a 35 minute set which fits in well with the usual format of an opening set by a symphony orchestra, a set by us and then, after an intermission, a final set featuring us and the orchestra. Our arrangements include:

  • "The Mooche", by Duke Ellington
  • "Grandpa's Spells", by Jelly Roll Morton
  • "New Rag", by Scott Joplin
  • "East St. Louis Toodle-oo", by Duke Ellington
  • "High Society"
  • "Shake It & Break It"

Special Events

Over the years we have developed a number of special sets or concert repertoires which honour and capture the particular feel of the music played by interesting or famous jazz figures from the past. Such special concerts have been performed for the music of:

  • Louis Armstrong
  • Duke Ellington
  • Jelly Roll Morton
  • Jabbo Smith
  • Joe "King" Oliver
  • Spirituals & Gospel Music
